eBay Australia works differently from the US, UK and Canada. Eligible casual sellers can use Free Selling and pay no transaction fee on domestic sales, while business sellers use eBay Pro plans with rates that depend on the plan and the category. This guide compares the options and shows when each plan pays for itself.

All figures are in Australian dollars and come from our Australia eBay fee calculator, last checked on September 25, 2026. eBay Pro fees include 10% GST.

Free Selling

Free Selling is for eligible sellers who aren't on eBay Pro. On eligible domestic sales there's no transaction fee at all. A AU$100 sale costs AU$0 in selling fees.

Charges that can still apply:

  • International fee: 3% of the total for overseas buyers (AU$3.00 on a AU$100 sale).
  • Promoted Listings, if you choose to promote.
  • Below Standard surcharge of 5.5% if your seller performance drops.

eBay sets the eligibility rules for Free Selling, including a limit on sales. Check the current rules on eBay Australia's Free Selling fees page (linked in the sources below) before you rely on it.

eBay Pro plans

eBay Pro sellers choose one of four plans. Each has a transaction fee rate that depends on the category tier, up to AU$4,000 per sale, a lower rate above that, and a per-order fee.

When does each Pro plan pay for itself?

Divide the extra monthly cost by the rate saving to get the monthly sales you need. (These figures ignore the 3-cent difference in per-order fees, which matters only for very small orders.)

Starter → Basic (AU$27.45 a month)

Category tierRate savingMonthly sales to break even
Tier 1 (appliances and tech)5.37 pointsabout AU$511
Tier 2 (most categories)1.96 pointsabout AU$1,401
Tier 3 (vehicle parts)0.97 pointsabout AU$2,830
Tier 4 (fashion, media, collectables)0.31 pointsabout AU$8,855

Tech sellers benefit from Basic very quickly. Fashion and collectables sellers need much higher sales before Basic beats Starter on transaction fees alone.

Higher plans

  • Basic → Featured costs AU$55 more a month and saves 1.10 points in tier 2, so it pays for itself at about AU$5,000 in monthly tier 2 sales.
  • Featured → Anchor costs AU$522.50 more a month and saves 0.66 points in tier 2, so it takes about AU$79,167 in monthly tier 2 sales on rates alone. Anchor is for very high-volume sellers.

Higher plans can also include more listings and tools, so check what each plan includes, not just the rates.

Other things to know

  • No Top Rated discount: unlike the US, UK and Canada, eBay Australia doesn't give Top Rated sellers 10% off. See Top Rated Seller benefits for how it works elsewhere.
  • International fees are lower on Pro: 1.1% versus 3% on Free Selling. See international selling fees.
  • GST: Pro fees include 10% GST unless your account has approved tax-exempt status.
  • Large sales: the rate drops to 2.5% (Starter) or 2.75% (other plans) above AU$4,000. A AU$5,000 sale on Starter costs AU$561.30.

Which option is right for you?

  • Clearing out personal items occasionally: Free Selling, if you're eligible.
  • Starting a small business: Pro Starter has no monthly fee, so you pay only when you sell.
  • Growing, especially in tech and general categories: Pro Basic once your sales pass the break-even point for your tier.
  • High-volume businesses: Featured or Anchor, based on the break-even maths and the tools you need.
