The eBay Below Standard Fee: What It Costs and How to Fix It
Published 3 min read
In this guide
If your eBay seller level drops to Below Standard, eBay adds an extra fee to every sale. It's one of the most expensive charges on the platform, and it hits exactly when a seller is already struggling. Here's what it costs, why it happens, and how to get back above standard.
Figures come from our calculators, last checked on September 25, 2026.
What is the Below Standard fee?
eBay rates every seller as Top Rated, Above Standard or Below Standard, based on its seller performance standards. Sellers rated Below Standard pay an additional fee on top of the normal final value fee and per-order fee:
| Market | Below Standard surcharge | Extra fees on a 100 sale |
|---|---|---|
| United States | 6% of the total (7% after four consecutive months) | $6.00 |
| Canada | 6% of the total | C$6.00 |
| UK business sellers | 6% of the total, plus 20% VAT | £7.20 |
| Australia | 5.5% of the total | AU$5.50 |
Like the final value fee, the surcharge is charged on the total amount of the sale, including shipping and tax.
What it does to your profit
On a $100 US sale in most categories, total fees go from $14.00 to $20.00, a 43% increase. The effect on profit is even bigger for everyday items. Take a $35 item that cost $12, with $6 postage:
- Above Standard: fees $5.16, profit $11.84
- Below Standard: fees $7.26, profit $9.74
That's 18% of the profit gone. For a seller with 200 such sales a month, it adds up to $420 a month in extra fees. And being Below Standard can also mean less visibility in search and selling restrictions, so sales may fall at the same time.
Why sellers fall Below Standard
eBay measures a few key metrics over a rolling evaluation period. The main ones are:
- Transaction defect rate: sales with a defect, such as a seller-cancelled order (for example, because an item was out of stock) or a case closed without seller resolution.
- Cases closed without seller resolution: when a buyer opens a request and eBay steps in and finds in the buyer's favour.
- Late shipment rate: orders delivered late or without valid tracking uploaded on time.
eBay sets the exact thresholds, which can change. Check your seller dashboard in Seller Hub and eBay's seller performance standards page for the current figures and your own numbers.
How to get back above standard
- Stop the source of new defects first. Find out which metric is the problem in your seller dashboard. If it's cancellations, fix your stock tracking. If it's late shipments, extend your handling time to something you can always meet.
- Upload tracking promptly and use services that give accurate scan data.
- Resolve issues before eBay steps in. Reply to buyer messages quickly, and offer a return, replacement or refund before a request escalates.
- Improve your listings. Accurate descriptions, clear photos of any flaws and correct item specifics prevent "not as described" returns.
- Remove defects that weren't your fault. Some defects can be removed, for example when a carrier delay or a buyer's mistake caused them. Keep evidence and use eBay's processes.
- Be patient. Because the evaluation looks back over a period of months, it takes time for old defects to drop off, even after you've fixed the cause.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much is the eBay Below Standard fee?
In the US it's an extra 6% of the total amount of the sale, rising to 7% after four consecutive months. Canada charges 6%, UK business sellers 6% plus VAT, and Australia 5.5%.
Why is my eBay account Below Standard?
Usually because of a high transaction defect rate, too many cases closed without seller resolution, or a high late shipment rate. Your seller dashboard in Seller Hub shows which metric is the problem.
How long does it take to get out of Below Standard?
It depends on your sales volume and how many defects you have, because eBay evaluates performance over a rolling period of months. Fixing the cause quickly and removing eligible defects shortens it.
Can defects be removed from my eBay account?
Some can, such as defects caused by carrier delays or buyer error. Keep evidence and use eBay's processes, or get help from a performance consultant.
