eBay Profit Margin Guide: How to Calculate and Improve It

"Is this a good margin?" is one of the most common questions eBay sellers ask, and one of the hardest to answer without the right numbers. This guide explains how to calculate your eBay profit margin and return on investment correctly, what the numbers tell you, and how to improve them.
Examples use US rates from our calculator (most categories: 13.6% plus $0.40 per order), last checked on September 25, 2026.
Profit, margin and ROI: three different numbers
Our calculators show all three, because each one answers a different question:
- Net profit is the money you keep: revenue − eBay fees − item cost − your shipping cost.
- Profit margin is net profit as a share of revenue (item price + shipping charged). It tells you how much of each sale you keep.
- Return on investment (ROI) is net profit as a share of your costs (item cost + shipping cost). It tells you how hard your money is working.
Example: you sell an item for $40 with free shipping. It cost you $10, and postage costs $6.
- eBay fees: $5.44 + $0.40 = $5.84
- Net profit: $40 − $5.84 − $10 − $6 = $18.16
- Profit margin: $18.16 ÷ $40 = 45.4%
- ROI: $18.16 ÷ $16 = 113.5%
Remember that sales tax is not revenue. It's part of the total eBay charges fees on, but it's passed on to the state. See sales tax and eBay fees.
Why margin alone can mislead you
Compare two items:
| Item | Price | Costs | eBay fees | Net profit | Margin | ROI |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | $25 | $10 | $3.80 | $11.20 | 44.8% | 112% |
| B | $400 | $300 | $54.80 | $45.20 | 11.3% | 15.1% |
Item A has four times the margin, but item B makes four times the profit per sale. Which is better depends on:
- Your time: if each sale takes the same effort, item B earns more per hour.
- Your cash: item B ties up $280 per unit in stock. The same money would buy 56 units of item A.
- Your risk: with an 11% margin, one return, a price drop or a promoted sale can wipe out the profit on item B.
- How fast each sells: a high-margin item that sits for six months may earn less than a low-margin one that sells every week.
Look at all three numbers together, and then think about speed.
What's a "good" margin on eBay?
There's no universal answer, because it depends on your products, your time and how you source. Instead of chasing a benchmark, set your own minimums:
- A minimum profit per sale that makes the listing, packing and posting worth your time.
- A minimum margin that leaves room for returns, price drops and promotion.
- A minimum ROI if cash is your constraint, especially when buying stock to resell.
Then check every item against those minimums before you list or buy it. Our guide to checking profit before you buy shows how.
How to improve your margins
Lower your eBay fees
- Top Rated Plus and a Store together take the $40 example's fees from $5.84 to $4.97, lifting the margin from 45.4% to 47.6%. See Top Rated Seller benefits and our Store guide.
- Use category thresholds in sneakers, handbags and jewelry.
- Promote selectively. A 6% ad rate cuts the example's margin from 45.4% to 39.4%. See the Promoted Listings guide.
Lower your other costs
- Buy postage at discounted rates, and measure parcels accurately.
- Buy packaging in bulk, and reuse clean boxes where appropriate.
- Source better. The price you pay for stock usually matters more than anything else.
Raise your revenue
- Improve photos, titles and item specifics so items sell at the top of the market range.
- Bundle cheap items into lots to raise the order value.
- Use auctions for rare items. See auction vs fixed price.
Track margin over time, not just per sale
Per-sale margins don't show everything. Once a month, add up your total sales, fees (from your eBay invoice), stock costs, postage, packaging and any subscriptions, and work out your overall margin. Include costs that aren't tied to one sale, like your Store subscription, supplies and software. That's your true business margin.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate my eBay profit margin?
Divide your net profit by your revenue. Net profit is item price plus shipping charged, minus eBay fees, item cost and your shipping cost. Revenue is item price plus shipping charged.
What is the difference between margin and ROI?
Margin is profit as a share of revenue: how much of each sale you keep. ROI is profit as a share of your costs: how hard your money is working.
What is a good profit margin on eBay?
It depends on your products, time and sourcing. Set your own minimum profit per sale, minimum margin and minimum ROI, and check every item against them before listing.
Is sales tax part of my eBay revenue?
No. eBay charges fees on sales tax, but the tax is passed to the state, so leave it out of your revenue when calculating margin.
