Shipping is one of the most misunderstood parts of eBay's fees. Does eBay take a cut of shipping? Does free shipping cost you more? Can you save on fees by charging less for the item and more for postage? Here are the answers, with examples from our calculator (US rates, last checked on September 25, 2026).

Does eBay charge fees on shipping?

Yes. eBay's final value fee is charged on the total amount of the sale, and that includes the shipping and handling the buyer pays. So do the Promoted Listings ad fee and the international fee. In most categories, every $1 you charge for shipping adds 13.6 cents to your final value fee.

What eBay doesn't charge a fee on is the postage label you buy. That's a cost to you, not part of the sale.

Free shipping vs charging for shipping

Because fees are charged on the total the buyer pays, it doesn't matter to eBay how you split that total between item price and shipping. These two listings cost exactly the same:

ListingBuyer payseBay feesYour profit
$30 item + $9 shipping$39$5.70$12.30
$39 item, free shipping$39$5.70$12.30

(Item cost $12, postage $9, most categories, no Store.)

So choose based on how buyers see your listing, not on fees:

  • Free shipping is simple for buyers, looks good in search results, and avoids complaints about shipping charges.
  • A separate shipping charge gives you a lower headline price, which can compare better when buyers sort by price, and lets you use calculated shipping for heavy or bulky items.

There's one important exception: in the athletic shoes category, the lower 8% rate depends on the item price being $150 or more, so moving shipping into the price can cut your fees. See our sneaker fee guide.

Undercharging for shipping costs you twice

If you charge the buyer less for shipping than it costs you, you pay the difference yourself. Here's the same $30 item with $9 postage:

  • Charging $9 shipping: profit $12.30
  • Charging $5 shipping: profit $8.84

The $4 shortfall comes straight out of your profit (fees are 54 cents lower, but you're still $3.46 worse off). If you offer free or cheap shipping, build the real postage cost into your item price.

Overcharging for shipping doesn't avoid fees

Some sellers think they can dodge fees by listing the item cheaply and charging a lot for shipping. It doesn't work, because the fee is charged on the total. Charging $15 shipping on the $30 item raises your fees to $6.52. Excessive shipping charges can also put buyers off, lead to low detailed seller ratings, and break eBay's shipping policies.

Practical shipping tips that protect your profit

  1. Weigh and measure before you list. Guessing postage is the most common way small sellers lose money on shipping.
  2. Use calculated shipping for heavy or bulky items, so buyers far away pay more and nearby buyers pay less.
  3. Buy labels through eBay or a discounted provider, which is usually cheaper than paying retail at the counter.
  4. Include packaging costs in your pricing: boxes, mailers, tape and padding.
  5. Offer combined shipping to encourage buyers to add more items to an order. This spreads the per-order fee across more items.
  6. Ship on time with tracking. Late shipments can cost you Top Rated status and its 10% fee discount.

International shipping

For buyers outside your country, eBay adds an international fee on the total, including shipping. US sellers pay 1.65%. Using eBay's international shipping program, the buyer pays international shipping and import charges at checkout, while you ship to a domestic hub. Details in eBay international selling fees.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does eBay take a percentage of shipping?

Yes. The final value fee is charged on the total amount of the sale, which includes the shipping the buyer pays. In most categories that's 13.6%.

Is free shipping cheaper in eBay fees?

No. A $39 item with free shipping and a $30 item with $9 shipping cost the same in fees, because eBay charges on the total the buyer pays.

Does eBay charge fees on the shipping label I buy?

No. The label is your cost, not part of the sale. eBay's fees are based on what the buyer pays.

Can I avoid eBay fees by charging more for shipping?
