eBay Fees for Sneakers: The $150 Rule Explained (2026)
Published 3 min read
In this guide
Sneakers have one of the most unusual fee structures on eBay. Below a certain price they cost the same as most categories to sell. At $150 or more, the rate drops to 8% and the per-order fee disappears. Getting on the right side of that line can nearly halve your fees on a pair.
Rates are US (eBay.com) rates for the athletic shoes category, from our calculator, last checked on September 25, 2026.
eBay sneaker fees at a glance
| Item price | No Store | Basic, Premium or Anchor Store | Per-order fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under $150 | 13.6% of the total | 12.7% of the total | $0.40 ($0.30 if the total is $10 or less) |
| $150 or more | 8% of the total | 7% of the total | None |
The rate is still charged on the total amount of the sale, including shipping and tax. But which rate applies depends on the item price alone.
What you pay at different prices
| Item price | Total fees (no Store) | Total fees (with a Store) |
|---|---|---|
| $60 | $8.56 | $8.02 |
| $120 | $16.72 | $15.64 |
| $149.99 | $20.80 | $19.45 |
| $150 | $12.00 | $10.50 |
| $250 | $20.00 | $17.50 |
| $400 | $32.00 | $28.00 |
A $150 pair costs $8.80 less in fees than a $149.99 pair. In fact, fees on a $250 pair are lower than on a $149.99 one.
The $150 threshold in practice
Price at $150, not $145
Say a pair cost you $90 and postage costs $12, with free shipping for the buyer:
- At $145: fees are $20.12, and you make $22.88.
- At $150: fees are $12.00, and you make $36.00.
A $5 higher price earns you $13.12 more. If sold prices for your pair are anywhere near $150, pricing at $150 or just above is almost always the better choice.
Move shipping into the price
Because the threshold is based on the item price, how you split the price and the shipping matters here, unlike in most categories.
- $140 item + $12 shipping (buyer pays $152): the item price is under $150, so fees are 13.6% of $152 plus $0.40 = $21.07.
- $150 item + $2 shipping (buyer still pays $152): now the 8% rate applies, and fees are $12.16.
Same buyer cost, $8.91 less in fees. For pairs close to $150, include most or all of the shipping in the item price.
Does a Store make sense for sneaker sellers?
A Basic Store lowers the rate by 1 point on pairs of $150 or more (8% → 7%) and by 0.9 points below $150. For most sneaker sellers, that's similar to the saving in other categories, so the same break-even maths applies: divide the monthly Store cost by 0.01 to find the monthly sales you'd need from $150+ pairs. Our Store subscription guide walks through it.
Top Rated Plus also gives 10% off the final value fee. On a $400 pair, fees drop from $32.00 to $28.80. See Top Rated Seller benefits.
Tips for selling sneakers on eBay
- Use the correct category. The special rate applies to eBay's athletic shoes category. Casual or dress shoes follow standard clothing rates.
- Photograph every angle, including soles, insoles, the size tag and the box label. Show any creasing or wear clearly.
- Fill in item specifics: brand, model, colorway, style code, size and condition. Buyers filter by them.
- Check whether eBay's authentication program applies to your pair, as it can increase buyer confidence on higher-priced sneakers.
- Check sold listings for your exact size. Prices can vary a lot between sizes of the same model.
- Promote carefully. At 8%, sneaker fees are low, so a modest ad rate can be affordable on $150+ pairs. Below $150, margins are tighter. See our Promoted Listings guide.
Canada and the UK
- Canada: the same structure applies in Canadian dollars. Athletic shoes at C$150 or more are 8% (7% with a Store) with no per-order fee. A C$150 pair costs C$12.00. Try the Canada calculator.
- UK: eligible trainers are 11.9% for business sellers, falling to 7% at £100 or more, plus VAT, the per-order fee and the regulatory operating fee. A £100 pair costs £9.30 in total fees, compared with £13.71 on a £90 pair. Try the UK calculator.
